Austenitic stainless steels are among the most widely used steel alloys. These steels typically contain 17% chromium, along with nickel and additions such as molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content gives the steel its austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance. Higher levels of molybdenum further improve resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. As a result, stainless steel 1.4435, also known as 316L or X2CrNiMo18-14-3, is an excellent choice for demanding environments that require superior corrosion resistance. This alloy is non-magnetic in the annealed state but may become slightly magnetic after cold working. Thanks to its increased molybdenum content, 1.4435 offers better pitting resistance than 1.4404. The steel is easy to weld using all common methods, and no post-weld heat treatment is necessary if welded in the annealed condition.
