Austenitic stainless steels are the most commonly used steel alloys. With 17% chromium, these steels also contain nickel and may include molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. Nickel ensures the austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance. The higher molybdenum content in alloys like 1.4435, 316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3 significantly improves resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids, making them ideal for demanding environments. In the annealed state, this steel is non-magnetic but may become slightly magnetic after cold working. Compared to 1.4404, 1.4435 offers superior pitting resistance. It is easily weldable using standard techniques, and no heat treatment is necessary after welding if performed in the annealed state.
