Austenitic stainless steels are highly popular and widely used alloys. They typically contain 17% chromium, along with nickel and elements such as molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content creates an austenitic structure, significantly enhancing corrosion resistance. High molybdenum content further improves resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. As a result, stainless steel grades like 1.4435, 316L, and X2CrNiMo18-14-3 are ideal for demanding applications requiring outstanding corrosion resistance. These steels are non-magnetic when soft, though they may become magnetic after cold working. Thanks to the increased molybdenum, 1.4435 offers better pitting corrosion resistance than 1.4404. This alloy is easy to weld by all common methods, and post-weld heat treatment is not necessary if welded in the annealed state.
