Austenitic stainless steels are among the most widely used alloys. With a chromium content of 17%, these steels also contain nickel and may include molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The presence of nickel enables the austenitic structure, providing excellent corrosion resistance. Higher levels of molybdenum further enhance resistance to chlorides, sulfuric, and organic acids. This makes 1.4435 (316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3) stainless steel an excellent option for applications demanding superior corrosion resistance. In its annealed state, the alloy is non-magnetic but may become magnetic after cold working. Thanks to its higher molybdenum content, it offers improved pitting resistance over 1.4404. This steel is easily weldable using standard methods, and post-weld heat treatment is not required if welded in the annealed state.
