Austenitic stainless steels are the most commonly used steel alloys, known for their excellent corrosion resistance. These alloys typically contain 17% chromium and are further enhanced with nickel, as well as additions like molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content supports the austenitic structure, while molybdenum increases resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. That’s why stainless steel grades 1.4435, 316L, and X2CrNiMo18-14-3 are preferred for demanding environments. In its soft state, this steel is non-magnetic, though it may become slightly magnetic due to cold working. Thanks to its higher molybdenum content, 1.4435 offers superior pitting resistance compared to 1.4404. It is also easy to weld with standard techniques, and post-weld heat treatment is unnecessary if welded in the annealed condition.
