Austenitic stainless steels are among the most widely used steel alloys. With 17% chromium, they also contain nickel and may include molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. Nickel ensures the austenitic structure, providing excellent corrosion resistance. Higher molybdenum content boosts resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. This makes stainless steel grades like 1.4435, 316L, and X2CrNiMo18-14-3 ideal for applications needing superior corrosion protection. When soft, this steel is non-magnetic, though it can develop magnetic properties after cold working. Thanks to its increased molybdenum, 1.4435 offers better pitting resistance than 1.4404 and can be welded easily using all common methods. No post-weld heat treatment is required if welded in an annealed state.
