Austenitic stainless steels are highly popular due to their excellent properties. With 17% chromium, nickel, and added molybdenum, titanium, or niobium, these steels offer significant corrosion resistance. The nickel content ensures the austenitic structure, while the elevated molybdenum improves resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. Stainless steel 1.4435 (316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3) is ideal for demanding environments where superior corrosion resistance is essential. It is non-magnetic when soft, but may become magnetic after cold working. Thanks to its higher molybdenum content, it offers better pitting resistance than 1.4404. This material is easy to weld with standard methods and does not require heat treatment after welding if it’s in the annealed condition.
