Austenitic steels are the most commonly used steel alloys, known for their remarkable corrosion resistance. These steels contain 17% chromium, nickel, and may include molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content ensures an austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance, while molybdenum significantly increases resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. This makes 1.4435 (316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3) stainless steel an excellent choice for demanding environments. In its soft state, it is non-magnetic, but can become magnetic after cold working. Due to its higher molybdenum content, it offers better pitting resistance than 1.4404. This alloy is easily weldable by all standard methods and does not require post-weld heat treatment if welded in the annealed condition.
