Austenitic stainless steels are the most commonly used alloys, known for their excellent corrosion resistance. These steels typically contain around 17% chromium, as well as nickel and additional elements such as molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content helps form the austenitic structure, which enhances corrosion resistance, while molybdenum increases resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. For this reason, 1.4435, 316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3 stainless steel is often the preferred choice for demanding environments. In its annealed state, this steel is non-magnetic, but may become magnetic after cold working. Due to its higher molybdenum content, it provides superior pitting resistance compared to material 1.4404. It is easy to weld using all standard methods, and no heat treatment is required after welding if performed in the annealed state.
