Austenitic steels are the most widely used types of steel alloys. With a chromium content of 17% and added nickel, as well as elements like molybdenum, titanium, or niobium, these steels offer excellent corrosion resistance. The nickel enables an austenitic structure, while the increased molybdenum content enhances resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. That’s why stainless steel grades such as 1.4435, 316L, and X2CrNiMo18-14-3 are ideal for demanding applications requiring superior corrosion protection. In its soft state, this steel is non-magnetic, but it may become slightly magnetic after cold working. Thanks to its higher molybdenum content, 1.4435 provides better pitting resistance than 1.4404. It is easy to weld using standard techniques, and no post-weld heat treatment is needed if welded in the annealed condition.
