Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used alloys due to their excellent corrosion resistance. These steels contain 17% chromium, nickel, and may include molybdenum, titanium, or niobium for enhanced properties. The nickel content ensures the austenitic structure, contributing to their resistance against corrosion. Higher molybdenum levels, as found in 1.4435, 316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3, further improve resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. This makes 1.4435 stainless steel a preferred choice for demanding environments. In its soft state, the steel is non-magnetic but may become slightly magnetic after cold working. The increased molybdenum content gives this alloy superior pitting resistance compared to 1.4404. It is easy to weld using standard methods, and no additional heat treatment is needed if welded in an annealed condition.
