Austenitic steels are among the most popular and widely used steel alloys. With a chromium content of 17%, these steels also feature nickel and added elements like molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content ensures an austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance. Molybdenum significantly improves resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. This makes 1.4435 (316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3) stainless steel an excellent choice for applications requiring superior corrosion resistance. While this steel is non-magnetic in the annealed state, it may become slightly magnetic after cold working. Thanks to its higher molybdenum content, it offers better resistance to pitting than 1.4404. 1.4435 can be welded by all common methods, and post-weld heat treatment is not needed if welded in the annealed condition.
