Austenitic stainless steels are the most commonly used steel alloys, known for their excellent corrosion resistance. They typically contain 17% chromium, along with nickel and alloying elements such as molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. Nickel ensures the austenitic structure, enhancing resistance to corrosion, while the high molybdenum content provides superior protection against chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. For this reason, stainless steel 1.4435 (316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3) is a preferred choice for demanding environments. This alloy is non-magnetic in its annealed state but may become slightly magnetic after cold working. Compared to 1.4404, 1.4435 offers better resistance to pitting due to its higher molybdenum content. It can be welded using all standard methods, and no heat treatment is necessary after welding if performed in the annealed condition.
