Austenitic stainless steels are among the most commonly used steel alloys. With 17% chromium, these steels also include nickel and may have additions of molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content gives the steel its austenitic structure, greatly enhancing corrosion resistance. Molybdenum further improves resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids, making 1.4435, 316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3 stainless steel a preferred option for demanding environments. This steel is non-magnetic when soft but may become magnetic with cold working. Thanks to its higher molybdenum content, it offers better pitting resistance than 1.4404. It can be welded easily using all standard methods, and no heat treatment is needed after welding if the material was annealed beforehand.
