Austenitic stainless steels are the most widely used among steel alloys. They typically contain 17% chromium, along with nickel and elements such as molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. Nickel ensures the austenitic structure, contributing to excellent corrosion resistance. Higher molybdenum content enhances protection against chlorides, sulfuric acid, and various organic acids, making 1.4435, 316L, or X2CrNiMo18-14-3 stainless steel ideal for demanding environments. This steel is non-magnetic in its soft state but may become magnetic after cold working. With more molybdenum than 1.4404, it offers superior pitting resistance. It is easy to weld with conventional methods and does not require post-weld heat treatment if welded in the annealed condition.
