Austenitic stainless steels are the most commonly used steel alloys. With a chromium content of 17%, they also feature nickel and may include molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. Nickel ensures an austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance. Higher molybdenum content increases resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids, making 1.4435, 316L, and X2CrNiMo18-14-3 stainless steel ideal for demanding corrosion-resistant applications. This steel is non-magnetic when soft, but may become magnetic after cold working. Compared to 1.4404, it offers superior resistance to pitting. It is easy to weld with all standard methods, and if welded in the annealed condition, no post-weld heat treatment is needed.
