Austenitic stainless steels are among the most widely used steel alloys, featuring 17% chromium, nickel, and additions such as molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content supports the austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance. Molybdenum increases resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids, making 1.4435 / 316L / X2CrNiMo18-14-3 stainless steel an excellent choice for environments demanding superior corrosion protection. This steel is non-magnetic in the soft state but may become magnetic after cold working. Its higher molybdenum content offers better pitting resistance compared to 1.4404. It is easily weldable with all standard methods and does not require post-weld heat treatment if welded in the annealed condition.
