Austenitic stainless steels are the most commonly used among steel alloys. With 17% chromium, as well as nickel and additions like molybdenum, titanium, or niobium, these steels offer excellent corrosion resistance. The nickel content ensures an austenitic structure, while the high molybdenum content increases resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. This makes stainless steel 1.4435 (316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3) an ideal choice for demanding environments. In its soft state, the steel is non-magnetic but may become magnetic after cold working. Thanks to its higher molybdenum content, 1.4435 offers better pitting resistance compared to 1.4404. It is easily weldable with standard methods, and no post-weld heat treatment is needed if welded in the annealed condition.
