Austenitic steels are the most commonly used among steel alloys. These steels typically contain 17% chromium, along with nickel and additions such as molybdenum, titanium, or niobium. The nickel content ensures the austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance. A higher amount of molybdenum increases resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids, making 1.4435 (316L, X2CrNiMo18-14-3) stainless steel an excellent choice for demanding environments. In its annealed state, this alloy is non-magnetic, but it may become magnetic after cold working. Thanks to its elevated molybdenum content, it offers improved pitting resistance compared to 1.4404. This steel can be welded easily with all standard joining methods, and post-weld heat treatment is usually unnecessary if welded in the annealed condition.
