Austenitic steels are the most widely used steel alloys, known for their excellent corrosion resistance. With a chromium content of 17%, and the addition of nickel, molybdenum, titanium, or niobium, these steels offer superior durability. The nickel ensures an austenitic structure, enhancing corrosion resistance, while the high molybdenum content further strengthens resistance to chlorides, sulfuric acid, and organic acids. Stainless steel grades such as 1.4435, 316L, and X2CrNiMo18-14-3 are ideal for demanding environments requiring outstanding corrosion protection. In its annealed state, this steel is non-magnetic, but may become magnetic after cold working. Compared to 1.4404, the higher molybdenum content in 1.4435 improves pitting resistance. It is easy to weld using standard methods, and does not require post-weld heat treatment when welded in the annealed condition.
