Stainless steel 1.4828 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-silicon alloy known for its excellent resistance to oxidation in air up to 950 °C. This grade, also referred to as H20N12S2, has a chemical composition similar to X15CrNiSi25-21 and 1.4841, but with comparatively lower chromium and nickel content. All these materials share similar silicon and carbon levels. Selection between these grades depends on cost and the environmental conditions of use, as determined by alloy composition and working environment aggressiveness. Steel 1.4828 is suitable for use at temperatures up to 1100-1150 °C.
This material offers resistance to nitriding, carbonitriding, carburizing atmospheres, embrittlement at elevated temperatures, and to gases containing nitrogen and oxygen.
