Zirconium belongs to the titanium group of heavy metals and is known for its outstanding corrosion resistance, good ductility, and softness. It is easy to process by rolling, forging, and hammering. While zirconium is a poor conductor of electricity, it conducts heat relatively well. At high temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals, but in air it remains stable due to passivation. The metal is highly resistant to acids, though it can be attacked by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. It is unaffected by aqueous bases and, in a finely divided state, exhibits pyrophoric properties. Zirconium is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, you will find up-to-date zirconium prices in our online shop. We are committed to offering you high-quality products and top-notch customer service.
Zirconium is primarily used in nuclear power plants, where it is formed into shells for uranium fuel elements using Zircaloy alloy. It is also utilized in the construction of chemical plants (for valves, pumps, and agitators), as an alloying element to enhance steel’s corrosion resistance, and in the production of surgical instruments. Thanks to its smokeless combustion, zirconium is used as flashlight powder in fireworks and signal flares.
Typical applications for zirconium include:
- Nuclear energy (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry (plant construction)
- Alloying with steel and manufacturing surgical instruments
- Flash powder for fireworks and signal lights
- Production of abrasive papers and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- High flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Good thermal conductivity
- Excellent resistance to most acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powdered form
- Non-toxic
