Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its high corrosion resistance, good flexibility, and relative softness. It is easy to process through rolling, forging, or hammering. While it is a poor electrical conductor, it conducts heat relatively well. At high temperatures, zirconium reacts with most nonmetals, but it remains stable in air due to passivation. The metal is resistant to acids, although aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid can attack it at room temperature. Zirconium is unaffected by aqueous bases and, in powdered form, is pyrophoric. It is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
Our Evek GmbH online shop offers competitive zirconium prices. We are committed to supplying high-quality products and excellent service.
Zirconium is primarily used in nuclear power plants for the cladding of uranium fuel elements (Zircaloy alloy). It is also essential in the chemical industry for constructing plant components like valves, pumps, and stirrers. As an alloying element, zirconium enhances the corrosion resistance of steel and is used in manufacturing surgical instruments. Its smokeless combustion makes zirconium ideal for use in fireworks and signal lights as flashlight powder.
Applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear energy (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry (plant construction)
- Alloying with steel and for surgical tools
- Flashlight powder for fireworks and signal flares
- Production of abrasive paper and pigments
Zirconium offers:
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Good thermal conductivity
- Outstanding resistance to most acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric behavior in powder form
- Non-toxic properties
