Zirconium, belonging to the titanium group, is a heavy metal known for its outstanding corrosion resistance, flexibility, and softness. It is easy to process by rolling, forging, or hammering. While zirconium does not conduct electricity well, it has relatively good thermal conductivity. At high temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals, but thanks to passivation, it remains stable in air. The metal withstands acids but can be affected by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. It is not affected by aqueous bases and, when finely divided, can be pyrophoric. Zirconium is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
In our Evek GmbH online store, you’ll find up-to-date zirconium prices. We are committed to offering high-quality products and excellent service.
Zirconium’s main application is in nuclear power plants, where it is used to make cladding for uranium fuel rods, typically from the Zircaloy alloy. It is also used in the chemical industry for manufacturing plant components like valves, pumps, and stirrers. As an alloying element, it enhances steel’s corrosion resistance and is used in surgical instruments. Thanks to its smokeless combustion, zirconium is used in fireworks and signal lights as flashlight powder.
Typical uses of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plant components (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical plant construction
- Steel and surgical instrument alloys
- Fireworks and signal light powder
- Production of abrasive paper and pigments
Zirconium stands out for:
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and elongation
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Relatively good heat conductivity
- Outstanding resistance to most acids and alkaline solutions
- Pyrophoric behavior in powder form
- Non-toxicity
