Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group. It stands out for its excellent corrosion resistance, good ductility, and relatively soft nature. Zirconium is easy to roll, forge, and hammer. While it conducts heat fairly well, it is a poor conductor of electricity. At high temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals, but remains stable in air due to passivation. Zirconium resists most acids, but can be attacked by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. It is not affected by aqueous bases and, in powder form, can be pyrophoric. Zirconium is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
We offer up-to-date zirconium prices in the Evek GmbH online shop and are committed to providing you with top-quality products and outstanding service.
Zirconium is primarily used in nuclear power plants, where it is made into shells for uranium fuel rods (Zircaloy alloy). It also finds application in chemical plant construction (such as valves, pumps, and stirrers), and as an alloying element, it improves the corrosion resistance of steel. Zirconium alloys are used in surgical instruments. Thanks to its smokeless combustion, zirconium is found in flashlight powders for fireworks and signal lights.
Main applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry (plant construction)
- Alloying metal (steel, surgical instruments)
- Flashlight powder (fireworks, signal lights)
- Manufacture of abrasive papers and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Good thermal conductivity
- High resistance to almost all acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powder form
- Non-toxic
