Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, good flexibility, and relatively soft texture. This metal is easy to roll, forge, and hammer. While zirconium conducts heat well, it is a poor conductor of electricity. At elevated temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals but remains stable in air due to passivation. Zirconium resists most acids, though it can be attacked at room temperature by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. It is unaffected by aqueous bases and, in powder form, can be pyrophoric. Zirconium is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, you can find up-to-date zirconium prices in our online shop. We are committed to delivering high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Zirconium is primarily used in the nuclear industry for manufacturing uranium fuel element claddings from Zircaloy alloy. It is also utilized in the construction of chemical plants (such as valves, pumps, and stirrers), as an alloying element to enhance steel’s corrosion resistance, and in the production of surgical instruments. Thanks to its smokeless burning properties, zirconium is used in fireworks and signal flares as flashlight powder.
Applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry (plant construction)
- Alloying metal for steel and surgical instruments
- Flashlight powder in fireworks and signal lights
- Production of abrasive paper and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Outstanding corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Relatively good thermal conductivity
- Excellent resistance to almost all acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powdered form
- Non-toxic
