Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, good flexibility, and relatively soft texture. It is easy to work with using rolling, forging, or hammering methods. While it is a poor conductor of electricity, it transfers heat relatively well. Zirconium reacts with most nonmetals at high temperatures, but remains stable in air due to passivation. It is resistant to most acids, though it can be affected by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. It is not sensitive to aqueous bases, and in powder form, zirconium can be pyrophoric. The metal is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
In our Evek GmbH online shop, you can find up-to-date zirconium prices. We are committed to offering high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Most commonly, zirconium is used in nuclear power plants, where it is made into shells for uranium fuel rods (Zircaloy alloy). It is also utilized in the chemical industry for building plant components such as valves, pumps, and stirrers. As an alloying element, zirconium enhances steel’s corrosion resistance and is used in surgical instruments. Thanks to its smokeless combustion, it is also employed as flashlight powder in fireworks and signal lights.
Main uses of zirconium:
- Nuclear power plant fuel rod cladding
- Chemical industry equipment
- Alloying steel and manufacturing surgical instruments
- Flashlight powder for fireworks and signal lights
- Production of abrasive papers and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Extremely high resistance to corrosion
- Good flexibility and formability
- Poor electrical but good thermal conductivity
- Outstanding resistance to most acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in finely divided form
- Non-toxic
