Zirconium belongs to the titanium group of heavy metals and is known for its outstanding corrosion resistance, excellent flexibility, and relative softness. It is easy to process through rolling, forging, and hammering. While zirconium is a poor conductor of electricity, it conducts heat relatively well. At elevated temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals, but remains stable in air due to passivation. Zirconium resists acids but can be attacked at room temperature by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid. It is not affected by aqueous bases and, in fine powder form, can be pyrophoric. Zirconium is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, you can find current zirconium prices in our online shop. We are dedicated to providing high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Zirconium is primarily used in nuclear power plants for uranium fuel element cladding, and also finds applications in chemical plant construction (valves, pumps, stirrers) and as an alloying metal to enhance corrosion resistance in steel and surgical instruments. Its smokeless combustion makes it ideal for use as flashlight powder in fireworks and signal flares.
Applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry equipment
- Alloying metal for steel and surgical tools
- Flashlight powder for pyrotechnics and signal lights
- Production of abrasive paper and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Relatively high thermal conductivity
- Excellent resistance to almost all acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powder form
- Non-toxic
