Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its outstanding corrosion resistance, good flexibility, and softness. It is easy to shape by rolling, forging, or hammering, and while it conducts heat fairly well, its electrical conductivity is low. At high temperatures, zirconium reacts with most nonmetals, but in air it forms a protective oxide layer, making it stable. The metal resists most acids, except it is affected by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid even at room temperature, but is not sensitive to alkaline solutions. Finely powdered zirconium is pyrophoric. It is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, we offer competitive zirconium prices and pride ourselves on high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Zirconium's main application is in nuclear power plants, where it is used in the form of Zircaloy alloy for uranium fuel element cladding. It is also utilized in chemical plant construction (valves, pumps, stirrers), as an alloying element to enhance steel's corrosion resistance, in surgical instruments, and as a component in flash powders for fireworks and signal lights due to its smokeless combustion.
Typical uses for zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry (plant construction)
- Alloying metal in steel and surgical tools
- Flash powders for fireworks and signaling devices
- Production of abrasive papers and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Exceptional corrosion resistance
- High flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Good thermal conductivity
- Excellent resistance to most acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powder form
- Non-toxic
