Zirconium belongs to the titanium group of heavy metals. It offers exceptional corrosion resistance, exhibits good flexibility, and is relatively soft. Zirconium can be easily rolled, forged, and hammered. While it is not a great conductor of electricity, it does conduct heat relatively well. At high temperatures, zirconium reacts with many nonmetals, but thanks to passivation, it remains stable in air and is resistant to acids. However, aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid can attack it even at room temperature. Zirconium is unaffected by aqueous bases, and in powdered form, it is pyrophoric. It is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, you can find up-to-date zirconium pricing in our online store. We take pride in offering top-quality products and outstanding service.
Zirconium is primarily used in the nuclear industry for uranium fuel element cladding (Zircaloy alloy). It is also utilized in the chemical industry for building components like valves, pumps, and stirrers, and as an alloying element to improve steel corrosion resistance. Zirconium alloys are used for surgical instruments, and due to its smokeless combustion, zirconium serves as flashlight powder in fireworks and signal flares.
Applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (fuel element cladding)
- Chemical plant construction
- As an alloying metal (steel, surgical instruments)
- Fireworks and signal light production
- Manufacture of abrasive papers and pigments
Main properties of zirconium:
- Exceptional resistance to corrosion
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Relatively good thermal conductivity
- Excellent resistance to most acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powder form
- Non-toxic
