Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group. It stands out for its exceptional corrosion resistance, good ductility, and relatively soft texture. Zirconium is easy to process by rolling, forging, and hammering. It has low electrical conductivity but conducts heat relatively well. At elevated temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals and remains stable in air due to a protective oxide layer. Zirconium resists acids but can be attacked by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. It is not sensitive to aqueous bases and, in powder form, can be pyrophoric. Zirconium is non-toxic and naturally occurs in the body.
We offer competitive prices for zirconium at Evek GmbH, ensuring high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Zirconium is primarily used in nuclear power plants, particularly for cladding uranium fuel elements in the form of Zircaloy alloy. It is also utilized in the chemical industry for manufacturing components like valves, pumps, and stirrers. As an alloying element, it enhances steel’s corrosion resistance and is used in surgical instruments. Its smokeless combustion makes it ideal for flashlight powder in fireworks and signal flares.
Typical applications for zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (cladding for uranium fuel)
- Chemical industry (plant construction)
- Alloying metal in steel and surgical instruments
- Flashlight powder in fireworks and signal lights
- Production of abrasive paper and pigments
Key properties of zirconium:
- Outstanding corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Relatively good thermal conductivity
- Excellent resistance to almost all acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powdered form
- Non-toxic
