Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, flexibility, and softness. This metal is easy to roll, forge, and hammer, conducts heat well but is a poor conductor of electricity. Zirconium reacts with most nonmetals at high temperatures but remains stable in air due to passivation. It is acid-resistant but can be attacked by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. Zirconium is not affected by aqueous bases and, in fine powder form, can be pyrophoric. It is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, we offer competitive zirconium prices in our online shop, along with high-quality products and excellent customer service.
Zirconium is mainly used in nuclear power plants for uranium fuel cladding (Zircaloy alloy), in chemical plant construction (valves, pumps, stirrers), and as an alloying metal to enhance steel’s corrosion resistance. It is also used for surgical instruments and as a smokeless combustion agent in fireworks and signal lights.
Applications of zirconium include:
- Nuclear power plants (uranium fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry (plant construction)
- Alloying in steel and surgical instruments
- Flashlight powder for fireworks and signal lights
- Production of abrasive paper and pigments
Zirconium stands out for its:
- Excellent corrosion resistance
- Good flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Good thermal conductivity
- Resistance to nearly all acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric properties in powder form
- Non-toxicity
