Zirconium is a heavy metal belonging to the titanium group, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, flexibility, and softness. It is easily processed by rolling, forging, or hammering, and while it does not conduct electricity well, it offers good thermal conductivity. Zirconium remains stable in air due to passivation and resists most acids, though it is affected by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. The metal does not react with aqueous bases and, in a finely divided state, can be pyrophoric. Zirconium is non-toxic and even occurs naturally in the human body.
At Evek GmbH, you’ll find competitive prices on zirconium and high-quality service. Our online shop provides a wide selection of zirconium products.
Zirconium’s primary use is in nuclear power plants, where it is made into fuel element cladding from Zircaloy alloys. It is also used in chemical plant construction for components like valves and pumps, as an alloying element to enhance steel’s corrosion resistance, and in the production of surgical instruments. Additionally, due to its smokeless combustion, it is used in fireworks and signal lights. Zirconium is also found in abrasive paper and pigments.
Main applications of zirconium:
- Nuclear power plants (uranium fuel element cladding)
- Chemical industry equipment
- Alloying metal for steel and surgical tools
- Flashlight powder for fireworks and signal flares
- Production of abrasive papers and pigments
Zirconium features:
- Outstanding corrosion resistance
- High flexibility and ductility
- Poor electrical conductivity
- Good thermal conductivity
- Resistant to almost all acids and aqueous bases
- Pyrophoric in powder form
- Non-toxic
