Tantalum is a rare refractory transition metal related to the vanadium group, closely resembling niobium and classified as a heavy metal. Pure tantalum is highly ductile and malleable, allowing it to be drawn into wires and rolled into sheets. It reacts with most non-metals at elevated temperatures, and forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to air, making it resistant to most acids. Tantalum dissolves only in hydrofluoric acid and molten salts.
