Tantalum is a rare, heavy refractory metal from the vanadium group, closely related to niobium. It is highly ductile, easily stretched, and can be rolled into sheets and wires. At elevated temperatures, tantalum reacts with many non-metals, but when exposed to air, it forms a stable oxide layer that protects it. The metal is highly resistant to most acids and is only soluble in hydrofluoric acid and molten salts.
