Tantalum is a rare, heavy, refractory metal from the vanadium group, closely related to niobium. Pure tantalum is highly ductile, making it easy to roll into sheets or draw into wires. At elevated temperatures, tantalum reacts with most non-metals, but in air, it forms a protective oxide layer. It is highly resistant to most acids and only dissolves in hydrofluoric acid or molten salts.
