Tantalum is a rare refractory transition metal belonging to the vanadium group, closely related to niobium and classified as a heavy metal. Pure tantalum is highly malleable and ductile, making it suitable for rolling into sheets and drawing into wires. At elevated temperatures, tantalum reacts with most non-metals, but forms a stable oxide layer in air, protecting it from corrosion. It is resistant to most acids and only dissolves in hydrofluoric acid or molten salts.

We offer competitive prices for tantalum in the Evek GmbH online shop. Contact us for expert advice on metals.

Tantalum is primarily used in electronics for producing compact, high-capacity capacitors. Thanks to its excellent biocompatibility, it is also employed in medical implants and instruments. Its chemical stability makes it valuable in the chemical industry for heat exchangers and pumps. Tantalum is also used to strengthen nickel-based superalloys for high-temperature applications.

    Main uses of tantalum include:

    • Microelectronics (capacitor manufacturing)
    • Medical industry (implants and surgical tools)
    • Chemical industry (heat exchangers and pumping equipment)
    • Nickel superalloys

    Key properties of tantalum:

    • Excellent malleability and ductility
    • Reactive at high temperatures
    • Highly resistant to most acids
    • Stable when exposed to air
