Tantalum is a rare refractory metal from the vanadium group, closely related to niobium and classified as a heavy metal. Pure tantalum is highly malleable, allowing it to be easily drawn into wires or rolled into sheets. At elevated temperatures, it reacts with most non-metals, but forms a protective oxide layer when exposed to air, making it very resistant to most acids. Tantalum only dissolves in hydrofluoric acid or molten salts.
