Tungsten is a dense heavy metal from the chromium group, classified as a transition metal. It features the highest melting and boiling points among all metals. Tungsten is ductile, medium-hard, and exceptionally strong, with paramagnetic properties and excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. Its chemical behavior is similar to molybdenum, remaining stable in air and resistant to non-oxidizing acids and water. Tungsten forms a protective oxide layer, making it resistant even to oxidizing acids, but it can be dissolved with mixtures of hydrofluoric and nitric acid.
You can purchase tungsten from Evek GmbH at competitive prices. For any questions, feel free to reach out — we’re here to help!
Tungsten carbide is widely used for producing hard metal tools. Owing to its high melting point, pure tungsten is often used in the lighting industry for incandescent lamp filaments. Other uses include equipment in chemical processing plants and as an alloying element in tungsten-molybdenum alloys. Tungsten is also utilized in sports equipment, military applications, and jewelry making.
Main applications of tungsten include:
- Carbide tools (as tungsten carbide)
- Lighting industry (as filament)
- Chemical processing equipment
- Military uses (armor-piercing ammunition)
- Sports equipment (high-end dart barrels, arrowheads, hammer throw heads)
- Jewelry manufacturing
Key properties of tungsten:
- Highest melting and boiling points of all metals
- Excellent ductility and high strength
- Paramagnetic behavior
- Outstanding thermal and electrical conductivity
- Strong resistance to both oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids
