Tungsten is a dense heavy metal in the chromium group, classified as a transition metal. It stands out for having the highest melting and boiling points among all metals. Tungsten is ductile, medium-hard, and very strong, exhibiting paramagnetic properties along with excellent thermal and electrical conductivity. Chemically, it behaves similarly to molybdenum and remains stable in air, resisting attack from water and non-oxidizing acids. Even oxidizing acids have little effect due to the protective oxide layer that forms. However, tungsten will dissolve in mixtures of hydrofluoric and nitric acid.
At Evek GmbH, you can purchase tungsten at competitive prices. For any further questions, please contact us—we are happy to help.
Tungsten carbide is widely used in the production of hard metal tools. Thanks to its exceptionally high melting point, pure tungsten is also utilized as a filament in incandescent lamps. Other important uses include equipment for chemical plants and as an alloying element in tungsten-molybdenum alloys. Tungsten also finds applications in the sports sector, the military, and in jewelry making.
Main uses of tungsten metal include:
- Carbide tools (as tungsten carbide)
- Lighting industry (as filaments)
- Chemical plant equipment
- Military (armor-piercing ammunition)
- Sports (premium dart barrels, archery arrowheads, hammer heads for hammer throw)
- Jewelry manufacturing
Key properties of tungsten:
- Highest melting and boiling point of all metals
- Good ductility and high strength
- Paramagnetic behavior
- Excellent thermal and electrical conductivity
- Strong resistance to both oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids
