Tungsten is a dense, heavy metal from the chromium group, classified as a transition metal. It boasts the highest melting and boiling points of all metals and combines ductility, medium hardness, and high strength. With paramagnetic properties, tungsten is also an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. Chemically, it is similar to molybdenum and is stable in air, resistant to water and non-oxidizing acids, and protected from oxidizing acids by a surface oxide layer. However, it is soluble in hydrofluoric and nitric acid mixtures.

Tungsten’s primary uses include the production of hard metal tools as tungsten carbide, filaments for incandescent lamps due to its high melting point, equipment for chemical plants, and as an alloying element in tungsten-molybdenum alloys. It is also widely used in sports equipment, military applications, and jewelry.
Main applications of tungsten include:
- Tungsten carbide tools
- Filaments for lighting industry
- Special equipment in chemical plants
- Armor-piercing ammunition in military
- Sports equipment such as dart barrels, arrowheads, and hammer heads
- Jewelry manufacturing
Key properties of tungsten:
- Highest melting and boiling points among all metals
- Excellent ductility and strength
- Paramagnetic characteristics
- Outstanding thermal and electrical conductivity
- High resistance to both oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids
