Tungsten is a dense, heavy metal from the chromium group, classified as a transition metal. It boasts the highest melting and boiling points of all metals and combines ductility, medium hardness, and high strength. With paramagnetic properties, tungsten is also an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. Chemically, it is similar to molybdenum and is stable in air, resistant to water and non-oxidizing acids, and protected from oxidizing acids by a surface oxide layer. However, it is soluble in hydrofluoric and nitric acid mixtures.
