Zirconium is a heavy metal from the titanium group, known for its exceptional corrosion resistance, flexibility, and softness. It is easy to roll, forge, and hammer. While zirconium conducts heat fairly well, it is a poor conductor of electricity. At high temperatures, it reacts with most nonmetals, but remains stable in air thanks to passivation. This metal withstands acids, though it is affected by aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. It is resistant to aqueous bases and displays pyrophoric properties when finely powdered. Zirconium is non-toxic and naturally present in the human body.

Zirconium is primarily used in nuclear power plants for uranium fuel element cladding (Zircaloy alloy).
