Niobium is a rare heavy transition metal in the vanadium group, known for its relatively low hardness, which makes it easy to work with, such as for forging. It has a very high melting point, is highly ductile at room temperature, and absorbs gases easily. Niobium is highly resistant to oxidation in air and is generally unaffected by most acids at room temperature, but is unstable in hot alkalis. Niobium powder is pyrophoric, and the metal itself is highly biocompatible.
We offer fair pricing for niobium in our Evek GmbH online store. We maintain close contact with our customers and welcome your inquiries.
Niobium is primarily used as an alloying element to improve the strength and toughness of stainless steels. Alloys of niobium and zirconium are used to coat nuclear fuel rods, while niobium-titanium alloys are essential in permanent magnet production. Thanks to its biocompatibility, niobium is also utilized in jewelry and medical implants.
Applications for niobium include:
- Alloying additive for steel and non-ferrous metals
- Jewelry making
- Coating surfaces of implants
- Production of bimetallic coins
- As a catalyst in hydrochloric acid manufacturing
Key properties of niobium:
- Low hardness with high ductility
- Extremely high melting point
- Excellent machinability
- Resistant to most acids
- Stable against hot alkalis
- High biocompatibility
