Niobium is a rare, heavy transition metal from the vanadium group. Its low hardness makes it easy to process, such as by forging. It features a very high melting point, excellent ductility at room temperature, and readily absorbs gases. Niobium is highly resistant to air and most acids at room temperature, but is unstable in hot alkalis. As a powder, niobium is pyrophoric. The metal is also notable for its good biocompatibility.
At Evek GmbH, niobium is offered at a fair price. We value close relationships with our customers and welcome your inquiries.
Niobium is primarily used as an alloying element, enhancing the strength and toughness of stainless steel alloys. Alloys with zirconium are used to coat nuclear fuel rods, while niobium-titanium alloys are important in manufacturing permanent magnets. Thanks to its biocompatibility, niobium is also utilized in jewelry and medical implants.
Common applications of niobium include:
- Alloying additive for steel and non-ferrous metals
- Jewelry production
- Coating implant surfaces
- Bimetallic coins
- Catalyst in hydrochloric acid production
Key characteristics of niobium:
- Low hardness and high ductility
- Extremely high melting point
- Good workability
- Resistant to most acids
- Insensitive to hot alkalis
- Excellent biocompatibility
