Niobium is a rare heavy transition metal belonging to the vanadium group. Its low hardness makes it easy to work with, such as for forging. Niobium offers a very high melting point, excellent ductility at room temperature, and readily absorbs gases. It is highly resistant to air and most acids at room temperature, but unstable in hot alkalis. Niobium powder is pyrophoric, and the metal itself is known for its good biocompatibility.
You’ll find fair prices on niobium in the Evek GmbH online shop. We maintain close contact with our customers and welcome your inquiries.
Niobium is primarily used as an alloying element, enhancing the strength and durability of stainless steel alloys. Alloys of niobium and zirconium are used to coat nuclear fuel rods, while niobium-titanium alloys serve in the production of permanent magnets. Thanks to its biocompatibility, niobium is also used for making jewelry and medical implants.
Common industrial uses for niobium include:
- Alloying additive for steel and non-ferrous metals
- Jewelry manufacturing
- Surface coating for implants
- Production of bimetallic coins
- Catalyst in hydrochloric acid production
Key properties of niobium:
- Low hardness and high ductility
- Very high melting point
- Good machinability
- Resistance to most acids
- Stable against hot alkalis
- Excellent biocompatibility
