Material 1.4742 is a heat-resistant chromium steel with added aluminum and a ferritic structure, designed for high-temperature applications with moderate mechanical loads. It offers heat resistance up to 1050°C in air and demonstrates excellent resistance to environments containing sulfur compounds and reducing gases.
This material is known for its good machinability and outstanding resistance to low-temperature carburizing gases.
The lack or minimal presence of nickel in 1.4742 makes it more affordable, while its ferritic structure supports cold working and welding. Additional heat treatment between 750–800°C should be followed by air cooling. Note that the steel becomes brittle between 450–530°C.
Grade 1.4742 is commonly used for burner components, furnace and reactor parts, pipe caps in furnaces, heat-resistant boiler elements, heater brackets, and various apparatus and machine parts in the plastics and drying industries.
