Rhenium is a rare transition metal known for its exceptional hardness, high density, and ductility. It boasts one of the highest melting points of all metals, surpassed only by tungsten. Rhenium offers excellent resistance to non-oxidizing acids, can be easily shaped through deep drawing, bending, or pressing, and features outstanding weldability and forgeability. It remains stable in air and is only slightly soluble in oxidizing acids. Notably, rhenium becomes superconducting at temperatures below 1.7 K.
If you are interested in purchasing rhenium, reach out to Evek GmbH. Our team is ready to support you with expert advice and answers to all your questions.
Rhenium is primarily used as an alloying element. For example, adding it to nickel superalloys enhances their resistance to creep and fatigue at high temperatures. Platinum-rhenium alloys are used for thermocouples in temperature measurement, while platinum-rhenium catalysts play a key role in increasing the octane rating of unleaded gasoline.
Main applications of rhenium include:
- Aircraft construction (e.g., turbine blades)
- Petroleum industry (catalysts)
- Electrical industry (thermocouples)
- Mass spectrometers (hot cathodes, electrical contacts)
Key properties of rhenium metal:
- Exceptional hardness, high density, and ductility
- Strong resistance to non-oxidizing acids
- Excellent formability, weldability, and forgeability
- High solubility in oxidizing acids
- Stable in air
- Superconductivity below 1.7 K
