Rhenium is a rare transition metal known for its exceptional hardness, high density, and ductility. It has one of the highest melting points among metals, second only to tungsten. Rhenium resists non-oxidizing acids well and is highly workable, making it suitable for processes such as deep drawing, bending, and pressing. It welds and forges easily, is stable in air, and is only slightly soluble in oxidizing acids. Notably, rhenium becomes superconducting at temperatures below 1.7 K.
For rhenium purchases, contact Evek GmbH. Our team is ready to assist you and provide answers to all your questions.
Rhenium is primarily used as an alloying element. In nickel-based superalloys, it enhances resistance to creep and fatigue at high temperatures. Platinum-rhenium alloys are used in thermocouples for precise temperature measurement, and rhenium is an important component in platinum-rhenium catalysts used to increase the octane rating of unleaded gasoline.
Key applications of rhenium include:
- Aircraft manufacturing (turbine blades)
- Petroleum industry (catalysts)
- Electrical industry (thermocouples)
- Mass spectrometry (hot cathodes, electrical contacts)
Key properties of rhenium metal:
- Exceptional hardness, density, and ductility
- Strong resistance to non-oxidizing acids
- Excellent formability, weldability, and forgeability
- Easily soluble in oxidizing acids
- Stable in air
- Superconductivity below 1.7 K
