Rhenium is a rare transition metal known for its exceptional hardness, high density, and ductility. It boasts one of the highest melting points among all metals after tungsten. Rhenium is highly resistant to non-oxidizing acids, easily workable by deep drawing, bending, and pressing, and offers excellent weldability and forgeability. This metal remains stable in air and is only slightly soluble in oxidizing acids. Below 1.7 K, rhenium exhibits superconductivity.
If you are interested in purchasing rhenium, reach out to Evek GmbH for expert advice and support. We are here to answer any of your questions.
Rhenium is primarily used as an alloying element. In nickel superalloys, for example, it enhances creep and fatigue strength at high temperatures. Platinum-rhenium alloys are used for thermocouples in temperature measurement, while platinum-rhenium catalysts help increase the octane rating of unleaded gasoline.
Common applications for rhenium include:
- Aircraft manufacturing (turbine blades);
- Petroleum industry (catalysts);
- Electrical industry (thermocouples);
- Mass spectrometry (hot cathodes, electrical contacts).
Key properties of rhenium metal:
- High hardness, density, and ductility;
- Excellent resistance to non-oxidizing acids;
- Good formability, weldability, and forgeability;
- Readily soluble in oxidizing acids;
- Stable in air;
- Superconductive below 1.7 K.
