Hafnium is a corrosion-resistant heavy metal that can exist in two crystal structures depending on temperature. In its pure form, hafnium is soft, malleable, and easy to shape by rolling or forging. When exposed to air, it forms a thin oxide layer that protects it from further oxidation. Hafnium is resistant to most acids and dissolves only in aqua regia and hydrofluoric acid at room temperature. Finely powdered hafnium is pyrophoric but non-toxic.
Our online shop at Evek GmbH offers competitive hafnium prices. We strive for excellent service and hope to build a long-term partnership with you.
The primary use of hafnium is in nuclear technology, where it serves as a material for control rods in nuclear reactors, including those in nuclear submarines. Adding just 2% hafnium to alloys with tungsten, molybdenum, niobium, or tantalum significantly increases their strength and heat resistance.
Typical applications for hafnium include:
- Nuclear engineering (nuclear reactors)
- Military uses (reactors in nuclear submarines)
- Flash lamps
- Alloying agent in niobium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten alloys
Key properties of hafnium:
- High flexibility
- Easy to roll and forge
- Stable in air
- Excellent resistance to most acids
- Pyrophoric in fine powder form
- Non-toxic
